How to paint doors

 

It never fails to surprise us just how much a freshly painted door can liven up a home. If the Fear of Mucking Up your door paint project has you worried, then you’re in the right place. Our step-by-step process will show you how to get it done right, without a problem.

 

Step One: Door Preparation

  • Take the door off its hinge. Use two people to make the job easier.
  • Lay the door down flat across a couple of sawhorses, chairs or even a table.Remove the handles and anything else attached to the door (such as hooks).Wash the surface with sugar soap to remove any grease, grime and dirt.
  • If there isn’t much space between the door and frame, it may need sanding to accommodate for new paint.
  • If the door has been previously painted with enamel, lightly sand until the shine is removed.Apply an undercoat using British Paints Prep 4in1.

Step Two: Paint Preparation

  • Stir your paint with a flat stirrer and grab your wall brush. If you don’t have a paint stirrer, use an old ruler.
    Remove excess paint by tapping the brush on the side of the can.

Step Three: Application

  • On a detailed door, paint the mullions first. Follow this order to save time and get an even finish.
    Then paint the main panels followed by the rails.Finish off by painting the styles and finally the edges.
  • Tipping off with the grain helps level out the finish.Give the door a light sand before applying the second coat. Don’t use any pressure. Let the paper do the work.
    Make sure you remove all the sanding residue before painting.
  • Apply the second coat following the previous instructions.
